“Pilates is not just exercises. For me, it’s a way of life”
Dalia Mantver
Dalia Mantver. The person behind Pilates in Israel.
For Dalia Mantver, Pilates in not merely a passing fad. It is a way of life. For more than 30 years, Dalia Mantver has been diligently working on the introduction and developing the Pilates in Israel. Dalia focuses on a quest for developing and diversifying the method, while broadening the repertoire of exercises and adjusting them to different audiences and the demands of modern life.
Pilates was first introduced in Israel in 1975, for the “Bat Dor” dance school. One year later, Dalia Mantver purchased the rights to use the technique. She was accredited as a Pilates Master by Alan Hardman, considered to be one of the leading Pilates instructors in the world, and became the owner of the first Pilates studio in Israel and the third in the world.
Dalia’s vibrant and dynamic personality, combined with her total dedication to promoting the Pilates culture in Israel, attracted a large and diverse audience of trainees over the years. Many of her students have begun spreading the method and are now independent Pilates teachers and studio owners.
The uniqueness of Pilates by Dalia Mantver is on her focus on the person and not the muscle. Every trainee is actually provided with a personal lesson, during which a unique lesson plan is developed, suited to his/her age, lifestyle, physical capabilities and even to his/her given mood on a certain day. Dalia believes that when Pilates matches your life, it becomes an energetic, healthy and vital way of life that impacts every level of our lifestyles. It enables you to reach the peak of your ability and to stretch it a bit further. It is your way to evolve. In your own way.
Dalia Mantver is a Pilates Master, owner of the Pilates by Dalia Mantver studio chain and the school of Pilates instructor training, and she conducts workshops and hosts television programs.
“My task is to enable you to develop. In your own way”
The Method
Pilates by Dalia Mantver
Dalia Mantver understands that we all lead different lifestyles. One person sits across a computer all day, while the other has a more physically demanding job. Based on the understanding that these people have different needs, Dalia Mantver developed an updated and dynamic Pilates method, which is based on the classic principles of the technique, but suited to our times.
The main distinction of Pilates by Dalia Mantver is that it does not focus on the muscle, but rather on the person: each trainee actually enjoys a private lesson in which a unique lesson plan is developed, suited to his/her lifestyle, physical capabilities and even his/her mood on a given day. When Pilates suits your life, it becomes a way of life, enabling you to reach the peak of your ability and to stretch it a bit further. It is your way to evolve. In your own way.
“We do not treat a muscle. We treat a the person.”

The Pilates Method
About Pilates
Pilates is a dynamic physical workout that strengthens the muscles, increases flexibility and stabilizes the body while utilizing all muscles of the body, including the internal-core muscles. While other workout methods work on different parts of the body separately, Pilates focuses holistically on the entire process of movement and mobilizes the entire body. Joseph Hubertus Pilates (1880-1967) called his technique “Contrology” – the art of combining the body, conscious and soul through full awareness to the movement.
The method is comprised of over 500 accurate movements that focus on core muscles of the body – abdominals, pectorals and back muscles – while meticulously ensuring accurate performance, flow of movement and improvement of the respiratory systems. The technique is based on the relationship between breathing and control over the body center, while placing a strong emphasis on stabilization as a foundation for free movement. The method is appropriate for anyone, at all ages and any physical condition.
The various exercises are performed on special equipment and on a mat, and the results are immediate: a balanced and toned body, long and strong muscles, improved posture and – mainly – new energy and vitality throughout the entire day.
Pilates Equipment
The unique equipment developed by Joseph Pilates is installed with springs, supportive handles and stabilizing bars. The special equipment is based on the resistance of the springs, which, on the one hand generate resistance to the muscle and, on the other hand, enable a greater range of movement for the joints and muscles. The equipment enables the performance of a great part of the workout in supine position, neutralizing the impact of gravity and enabling greater control and accuracy in operating the body.
Exercising with Pilates equipment enables each trainee to grow stronger and work at his/her own skill level, thus optimizing the potential of each one and rapidly achieving significant milestones. The result of working with equipment: the muscles grown longer, the body becomes more toned (without adding exaggerated volume to the muscle itself) and fills with energy and rejuvenating sense of vitality.
Principles of Pilates
Pilates is not merely a collection of exercises, but rather a method that enables one to understand the body and its motions. The technique focuses on the flow of movement from the center of the body, on controlling all parts of the body in time and movement and on organizing the movement and strength on the basis of 5 main principles:
1. Control
Controlling the muscle enables the performance of accurate and organized movements when performing the exercise. This is the ability to see and control the movement, while maintaining consciousness to each part of our body.
2. Breathing
Breathing is a key principle and integral element of each movement. Breathing is important to the supply of oxygen to the body during movement, in order to prevent over stressing the muscles. Breathing also helps us connect to our core and provides for a more appropriate sequence of steps comprising the entire movement. Joseph Pilates used to say that “even if you cannot complete the exercise, try to breath correctly.
3. Centering
In the center of the body (the area between the diaphragm and the thigh bones), there is an area surrounded by a large group of muscles that are not used every day. The Pilates method operates these muscles and every exercise begins and derives from the center and relates to it. The enhancement and improvement of movement in the center lead to the development of a stable and balanced body, minimizing the risk for injury and preventing chronic lower back pain.
4. Concentration and Accuracy
This is the natural development of centering and control, and the key for linking the mind and body. Each exercise requires the concentration on proper movement and performing it as accurately as possible, or else it will be mistaken and will not produce positive results. In order to properly work with the body, one must focus, listen to his/her body, its reactions, wanted and unwanted tensions and accordance of all parts, thus enriching the awareness to one’s body and movements. An inaccurate motion will continue to entrench the body’s mistaken habits. Being accurate with the small details, concentrating and paying attention to each of the body’s movements and muscle reactions, are the key to exercise effectiveness in balancing and toning the body.
5. Flowing Motion
This term relates to the tempo of the movement, the energy flow in the body, the sequence of muscular utilization and the organization of force. We control the flow of movement by properly using breathing and the body’s center.

Who Was Joseph Pilates
“I do not want to build muscles; I want to make people human beings” (Joseph Pilates)
Joseph Pilates (1880-1967) was born in Germany as a weak and sickly child. Encouraged by his parents, he participated in sports and, as years progressed, developed into an excellent athlete.
In 1912, Pilates moved to England to become the boxing coach for the Scotland Yard detectives.
During World War 1 (1914), Pilates was placed in a detention camp in England together with all other German subjects. While in the camp, Pilates began developing his method, working on a mat, in order to help his friends stay in shape. At the same time, he worked at the local hospital, helping the injured patients by connecting springs and ropes from the beds to their hand and leg joints to generate muscular resistance and develop their strength. This technique led to the development of the famous Pilates training beds.
After the war ended, in 1918, Pilates returned to Germany and met Rudolph Laban, a dancer, choreographer and inventor of a method of writing notes for movement. Rudolph is introduced to the effectiveness of the method and, through him, Pilates begins to spread among dancers.
With the rise of the Nazis, Pilates is asked to train a unit of the German army. He refuses and, in 1925, leaves Germany and immigrates to the U.S. En route to the new country, he meets Clara, who will later become his wife and “right hand” in teaching the technique.
In New York, in 1926, Joseph opens the first Pilates studio near the New York City Ballet studio. Many of the dancers come to train with Pilates and choreographers, including George Balanchine and Ted Shawn, become his close friends, both influenced by and enriching his work. As years go by, the connection between Pilates and the world of dance, theater, cinema and sports grows even stronger. Many famous artists and athletes, whose bodies are their main work tool, adopt the method as the optimal manner for meeting the high physical and mental requirements.
In the 1960’s, the method known as Contrology spread throughout the U.S. and, as time goes by, as it is proven to be highly effective, is further spread around the world by reaching millions of trainees.
Pilates studied the functioning and movement of the human body and that of animals throughout his entire life. He was also greatly influenced by yoga, oriental martial arts and the world of dance. He applied all of these elements within his method. Pilates believed that the method must also evolve and not contain only the basic exercises that he created. He believed in Pilates as a way of life that develops together with each individual.
“A healthy body is an essential precondition to happiness” (Joseph Pilates, 1880-1967).
